Where Have We Been?

AZ, CA, Baja, NM and TX - Winter 2024

Trip Logs

SoCal to Baja - January 2024

Ever since we left winter behind in Colorado, we've been pushing pretty hard with alot of one night stands.  Join us as we hustle through the SW and down the BCN coast to BLA to visit our sailing buddies and bask in the Baja sun.

Bahia de Los Angeles - January 2024

We finally consummated a long-planned reunion with good friends and explored the dirt side of Bahía de Los Angeles, which we’d sailed extensively a hundred years ago, poking into all of the little crooks and nannies around the bay.

Baja to CA Dunes - January 2024

Our exit from Baja was much like our entry, smooth sailing all the way - the driving portion, anyway.  We did, however, encounter a few hiccoughs and one calamity on this leg of our journey to the Imperial Dunes in southeastern California.

 Arizona Petroglyphs - January 2024

A huge pile of petroglyphs, a nasty mountain “trail,” a little museum stuffed with goodies from Gila Bend’s past, and then a detour into the big city for a new toy.

 Southern Arizona - February 2024

Wicked winds and winter weather in southern Arizona were tempered with a warm visit from old friends in a cozy winery.  Then as the snow melted we were off in search of migratory birdies, and oh my did we ever find them, flocks and flocks of big uns.

 Chiricahua Mountains - February 2024

From our BLM campground at Indian Bread Rocks we explored the Apache Pass, Fort Bowie and the Chiricahua National Monument.  Warm sunny days added to the allure of this area where we explored the old trails and learned a bit more history of the Chiricahua Apaches, the settlers who displaced them, and the cartels who are now using the old routes for nefarious activities.

Southern New Mexico - February 2024

Another nasty winter weather system was headed our way … a perfect time to duck the high winds, to hitch up and head to the comfort of another Harvest Host location.  There we enjoyed indoor hospitality during a dusty ole wind storm.  Bonus: a cool museum was only 6 blocks away.  Thus we left Arizona for the very western border of Southern New Mexico.

Cliff Dwellings and Pueblos - Mar 2024

We headed east on Hwy 90 ready to explore our next destination without realizing what a terrific trip through time it would be -- thousands of years worth of time.  The National Park Service did not disappoint!   We were blown away by the best restored and cared for historical site we’ve had the pleasure to visit.

Border Town to Taproom - Mar 2024

We again set our sights on the Mexican border, this time to avoid the hassle of finding a pharmacy in the US to fill our prescriptions.  Along the way we found a couple quirky, crazy monuments stuck off in their own little corner of Columbus, NM, plus plenty of stories about Pancho Villa and the Villistas’ raid on the little US town in 1916.

 Dripping Springs - Mar 2024

Yet another trip to the vet for Jacqui just to find out, again, there's no diagnosis and thus no fix.  That little frustration aside, the Organ Mountains east of Las Cruces, NM had alot to show us ... and one small item that we never did see.

Fort Davis, TX - Mar 2024

From our quirky overnight Harvest Host stop we encountered one of those stretches of highway that Texas is renowned for, empty miles and miles straight to the horizon -- thankfully not interminable.  Once we reached the horizon, the Davis Mountain scenery changed to oak and juniper forest.  Unlike the elusive Oryx of Dripping Springs, we actually spotted some unique Davis Mountain wildlife.

Big Bend Ranch, TX - Mar 2024

One of the coolest campsites we've ever stayed.

Eclipse in Del Rio, TX - April 2024

Undaunted by a cloudy day.  Not featured but appearing in a national article about the travelers who flocked to Texas.
